Ca Nhay waterfall, known locally as Nhi Thiu waterfall, is located in Na Hac hamlet, about 20 km from the center of Ha Lau commune, Tien Yen District, and in the 300 year-old forest.

Ca Nhay waterfall

Ca Nhay waterfall are moss stone blocks interspersed with ancient trees dating back approximately hundred years without human impact. Ca Nhay waterfall is the head of the river flowing through Ha Lau commune. The peak of the waterfall is Phuong Hoang (Phoenix) mountain, locally known as the 840 m high Khau Xieng and considered as the roof of Tien Yen district. From the Phuong Hoang peak, the waterfall flows through many forest canopies and visibly appears with the height of about 4 m in trapezoidal shape when it comes near Na Hac hamlet. With many large and flat stones, this place is great for camping tourism amidst natural forest.

Great attraction for backpack tourists

When the sun rises, the rays of the bright sun shine straight down into the Ca Nhay waterfall, creating magnificent scenery. According to the olds in Na Hac hamlet, there were many big fish jumping over the waterfall. As a result, the name “Ca Nhay” was formed. In recent years, no one has been allowed to catch fish due to the small amount of fish. Therefore, it’s time to preserve wild fish.

Precious timber in the forest is self-protected by locals, so Na Hac retains the primeval wood forests. For generations, Na Hac villagers have maintained their good tradition to protect primeval forests. All people have realized that these sacred forests will protect human life, prevent storms and provide fresh water for people’s lives and fields, precious medicinal plants etc. Losing forest means they could lose everything.

Ca Nhay Waterfall is like a stream of milk feeding the natural forests in Ha Lau commune

Ca Nhay waterfall will be an ideal attraction for visitors when tourism is gradually formed in Ha Lau commune. Ha Lau Sunday market has been restored in late 2018, not only attracting Dao ethnic groups from hamlets and villages in Ha Lau and other communes in Tien Yen district, but also appealing ethnic groups from Binh Lieu district and the district of Dinh Lap, Loc Binh in Lang Son province. Visitors have purchased and exchanged a variety of goods, such as forest bamboo shoots, cinnamon, Tien Yen chicken, nodding sticky rice cake, sugar canes, stewed pork dish (khau nhuc), brocade clothes etc. In late October 2019, Tien Yen district made a plan to build Khe Le village with 100% of Dao ethnic people in Ha Lau commune into a homestay tourist village, creating more opportunities for visitors to explore Ca Nhay waterfall.
